In a Hurry, Grab a Curry

This phrase is used by many Indian Specialty Take-Aways here in Durban, South Africa, where you will find the largest concentration of local residents from Indian descent; they certainly know how to make the best fragrant, hot and spicy curries; from vegan, vegetarian to meaty curries.

Call back the past
I have told you a number of times before about another traditional Durban dish that most visitors will not miss out on, and that is a Bunny Chow, nothing to do with bunnies by the way;)

Basically it's a hollowed out loaf of bread stuffed with a hot and spicy curry; there are many legends about the origins of the bunny Chow, and I quote from a previous post:

There are two legends around how the Bunny Chow originated.
One legend is that when migrant Indian sugarcane workers needed a container to carry their lunch to the sugar plantations, someone came up with the brilliant idea of hollowing out a loaf of bread which was ideal to hold their vegetarian curries. The cut-out piece was used to make a 'lid'.
Another legend tells a different story related to our horrid Apartheid history – as only whites could enter restaurants, a plan was devised by the Indian cooks to hide a curry inside the hollowed out bread, and then cover it with the bread lid and serve it through windows or at the back door.

My version below was an entry into the old sandwich Contest run by @jaybird back on the good old, bad now Steemit!

This version is a tad different in that I baked small loaves of bread in tins, cut off the top to make a lid, hollowed it out and filled it with a curry; but you get the drift.
You could actually Carry this Curry by hand for lunch break or a picnic like they did back in the day if we're to believe that version of the old story.

Fast forward to the year 2020
Today I've made a fragrant, spicy and hot Chickpea Coconut Cream Curry and served it with Garlic & Vegan Butter Naan Flatbreads and a light Carrot Salad especially for all my Hive friends.

  • Salt
  • 1 cup plain Coconut Yogurt
  • 100g Vegan butter
  • 2-4 Garlic Cloves, crushed
Mix dry ingredients together, add yogurt and mix to a soft dough.
Divide into 6 equal pieces, roll into flat circles on floured board.
Brush with melted butter & garlic, cook on hot skillet, brush other side with same after turning.

Delicious to look at can image the enjoyment around the table tucking into that, only thing I am not familiar with is all the vegan stuff.

Vegan butter I have never heard of, only use the good old fashioned butter my parents used, never liked margarine either.

Thanks for recipes and great photography to accompany the dish @lizelle

!BEER

Thank you Joan, Vegan ingredients are quite pricey here in SA and I must confess I prefer making the Naan bread with good old fashioned butter but the vegan version is really a good replace! You could also replace the Coconut yogurt with Greek style plain yogurt as that is very difficult to find.
Thanks for your valued feedback:)

Whoa @lizelle you really created a divine dish and a divine post. The curry looks so good and the flatbread is just as "wow". It's interesting to see different curries made around the world.

Your photos are beautiful!

It really is delicious and that Naan flatbread super easy and delicious, all in all a very good curry in a hurry! Thanks for popping in:)

This looks so good! We make a similar dish, but your naan looks better than what we buy.

I just wish my curry could taste as good as the pucker Indian chefs' curries, but it's getting closer to the real thing.
Thank you for popping in :)

Hi @lizelle, chickpeas curry is one of my favorite and of course best to eat it with nan bread. Lizelle, that chickpea curry - I've been looking for a recipe, so am definitely going to give this a go.

This really is a good one, found the method online but used my own blend of spices, really yum and super easy! Thanks for popping in Fiona!

Yesterday my husband made food with this bean it’s really delicious but your food looks good more than. You are a great chef.

That's a big compliment coming from you @sreypov, I really admire your cooking, your family is very lucky having you in the kitchen plus @justinparke as well;)

I didn't have time this week to make an entry, although we are always cooking. I actually made channa-aloo masala for my friend's birthday last night, but no time to make a recipe post of it. Your dish looks delicious @lizelle.

So now I've learnt a new word: channa-aloo masala, had to Google it, thank you @justinparke! I'm sure yours must have been delicious as well. Your friends and family certainly are blessed having you & @sreypov spoiling them with all the delicious food you both prepare!

I love chickpeas, your recipe looks really delicious, they are also very beautiful photos

Thank you @adonisr, appreciate your nice feedback, it was a delicious curry indeed!
