The first time I smoked DMT/ La primera vez que fumé DMT [Eng/Esp]

Have you ever smoked DMT?

I have.
And so many times I don't keep track anymore. For the last four years of my life I have been extracting, smoking and sharing DMT in ritual healing environments. As I say to the people I share my pipe with: For each hit of DMT I offer, I have taken one similar myself.

I have a lot of stories and recipes to share, but this entry is about the very first time I smoked DMT. The day I met HER.

20200310_190509.jpg

So, the year is 2016 and the date October 2th, Sunday. By that date, I had over a year since I first went to an Ayahuasca Ceremony, I had taken that road seriously and a lot of changes were occurring in my life. I was, by that date, the main contact for Ayahuasca and Ancestral Medicine Ceremonies in my area.

That weekend we had Yagé (Ayahuasca) Ceremonies on Friday and Saturday with my beloved brothers and sisters followers of Taita Giovanni "The Bear" Queta of the Cofán Community from Putumayo, Colombia. I absolutely love those guys! We had shared a lot of ceremonies already by that time and I had healed myself a lot with their medicine, prayers and beajtiful music. And they are very serious and responsible with their Medicine Ceremonies, spotless even.

My role as an organizer was being the host and taking care that interested people made it to the ceremony, having everything at hand so the guys could do the ceremony without worrying about menial stuff. Also keeping the team happy, fed and well rested.

Fast forward to Sunday around noon. The two ceremonies were amazingly beautiful. A lot of people arrived to share the holy medicine from the Jungle and, overall, we had a great time in the beautiful TERRAVENTURA Inn in Los Altos de Sucre, Venezuela.

KNOCK, KNOCK.

I was in bed, exhausted. I had 3 days without sleeeping, drinking and puking medicine and working my ass off so everything was perfect and the ceremonies went very well.

KNOCK, KNOCK.

Brother Rafael, it's Juan José, do you have a little Santa María (weed) you could give me? We are doing a wheel of xrtxhetuite smoked medicine.

Juancito and I on some other Cofán Ayahuasca Ceremony.

I was really, really sleepy and beyond tired, but I woke up, indeed having the weed, and gave a bunch of it to Juan, but excused myself and went back to bed.

Fifteen minutes later, deep in my sleepy mind:

They were smoking WHAT?.

My curiosity got the best of me, I got dressed and went down to the Great Hall, were they were gathered in a wheel of medicine, with Juan in the center, praying and holding a small joint, which he passed to a friend musician of medicine on the wheel. He proceeded to take three deep drags and POOF.

It was very obvious he entered a deep medicine trance.

Terraventura's Great Hall during a Yopo ceremony circa 2017.

Immediately, I sat down in the wheel in total awe and signaling Juan I wanted to participate.

For me, the visionary medicine trance was something really elusive. The visions, the medicine dimensions were, mostly, closed to me, save in rare, very rare and holy times. I felt something really big was going to happen that day.

SO,
before we get to the crucial point of me smoking DMT for the very first time,
there were two events that happened before this I have to share
:

The first is my second tattoo and my very fist medicine one.

I bombarded Paola, my talented tatoo artist, with images and ideas by mail. I asked for wind and a tree that symbolized the yopo medicine between all the stuff I sent her. She organized my crazy ideas and did this amazing work of art:

Tattoo artist: Paola Rodriguez

Beautiful isn't it?
Take notice of the tree roots and the lilac "wind" on the roots. This happened a couple of months before the crucial ceremony we were talking before.

Don't forget about this little detail, we'll get back to this later.

The second event was a music related one.

Before the ceremony I was listening, exclusively, mantras and medicine songs. I was exploring Brazilian Medicine Music in Portuguese, due to the influence of the Santo Daime Church, which I shared medicine a couple of times and learned a lot from.

I was obsessed with a song I found on Youtube to the point of listening only to it over and over again all day long. Jurema, Oh Jurema... I went to work on this Yage ceremonies with this song in my mind. Take note of this.

Back to the medicine circle.

With me expectant, nervous but really happy, praying for that small joint to last for everybody because I was almost dead last. But YES, Juan called me, I sat down in front of him and he gave me the following instructions:

Take three slow deep tokes and hold them all you can.

I did. I filled myself to the brink, closed my eyes and held that smoke like it was my last breath.

And it hit me.

I became a spaceship in a fractal world, with amazing music which sang to me about Unity, Love and comprehension. And I hadn't even exhaled yet. It was beautiful.

I exhaled the medicine. The trip went lighter, but I held my breath and I got deeper again in the medicine vision. I start navigating this world like it was natural, like I had been there before. Then in the distance I started to hear a maraca.
Nononono, I want to keep exploring this, I don't wanna go back just yet!

I came back down, saw Juan and exploded on laughs and utter happiness for around 10 minutes.

After I finally collected myself, I went down to talk with Aldo, another one of the apprentices of the Taita, a great friend and man of knowledge to ask him:

What did I smoke man?

I was in awe.

His answer:

It's an extract of a Mexican plant called Tepezcohuite. Here in Venezuela, it's everywhere too, we call it Cují Negro (Black Cuji). Oh! And in Brazil it's very important and they call it JUREMA.

The song!
I smoked the medicine the song was talking about!

WHAT.

Two weeks later I was in my kitchen doing my first extraction and I found it is done from the root bark of the Jurema tree that is a deep lilac color. LIKE MY TATTOO.
I'll share the story of my first extraction in a post later.

So that day I met her, Cabocla Jurema, spirito das matas.

That is the name of DMT for me. She has been a friend, a healer and over everything a great plant teacher to me.

Narración en español:

¿Alguna vez has fumado DMT?

¡Definitivamente amo a esos chicos!

¿Iban a fumar QUÉ?

20200523_104534.jpg

Tatuadora Paola Rodriguez

¿Hermoso, no?

Y todavía no había exhalado.

I have never tried it, but I would like to. Interesting story. It's weird how everything connects, isn't it?

There is a saying that says DMT finds you when you are ready.

Stunning post. Learning so much from you guys. I've never smoked it but I love the sacredness you guys bring to mind altering plant medicines. I love the poetry of the song, the tattoo and the moment alll coming together, meant to be. how powerful that must have been! Loved this post. xxx

Thanks f for the reply! Yeah plant medicine is like that. The more respect you give the most benefit they give back.

Uiiiii I also should write about my experience

Please do! As far as I have observed, each and everyone has a different but always special experience this beautiful medicine.

I love how you notice sinchronicities!

I've never smoked DMT but I'd love to try. I've done my share of mushrooms and acid but as much as I'm reading about DMT, it's a whole another level.

Thank you for sharing this! It's inspiring!

It took me a couple of months to notice how all that tied together over all the experimentation on the first days. I definitively recommend doing it of you already are in your medicine path already. The trip is short and really beautiful if you take care of your set and setting and go in with a firm intention.

Ammmmazing article BTW

I have journeyed far with Sister Jurema - what a gift She is!!! Smoked the DMT? That has not yet called my name. My travels with Sister Jurema have been life-changing. 😍

Hey, look one of the projects when I get more root ark is to make Vinho de Jurema. I have never made the brew, but I think it's time to learn that prayer. Jurema is a beautiful an loving plant teacher.

She is very gracious to those who prepare well. The Vinho de Jurema is rough on the uninitiated and not for new players. A Thai Shaman here study in Ecuador and bring the medicine back with her.

Yes, for those who do not respect our take her lightly, well the medicine has its rough side. But such is learning! Sometimes sweet, sometimes sour.
