Planting, foraging, and enjoy the abundance of spring | Plantar, recolectar y disfrutar de la abundancia de la primavera

Sometimes I stay away from posting on Hive, mainly because I consider I have nothing to impressive to share. But after going through some posts I start remembering that many people here have no problem in sharing small achievements of their daily lives and their content is well appreciated. So I'll go with that today and hopefully stay interacting more with this beautiful community of dreamers who are on daily basis doing their best to create and share.

Tanacetum balsamita

We went to a small nursery in town where we got some medicinal plants and flowers. In the picture you can appreciate costmary (tanacetum balsamita), which has a minty and citric blend of flavors.

It's leaves contain essential oils that can behave as pesticides. You can brew a tea that has antiseptic, carminative, astringent, antispasmodic, cholagogue, and sedative effects.

By extracting the oils in alcohol, it's possible to use the plant as protection for the liver. Some people use it in the kitchen to add flavor and medicinal properties to their food.

I would really like to do more morel hunting but it's easy to get caught up in daily life. Still we've been able to go out a few times and find a reasonable amount to use in a couple of meals. Not the most impressive sizes but that's shout-out to our keen eye that was able to detect these elusive shrooms.

Michay (Berberis darwinii) is finally showing a lot of flowers which are edible and a good source of vitamin C, as well as other antioxidants. It's a native chilean plant and anyone who's been following me for a while knows how much I value natives: they are already adapted to the climate and have established healthy ecosystemical relationships with other living beings of the area.

I helped with preparing the soil and planting some fava beans in a friend's yard and they are doing quite nicely. We covered them with mulch after this picture and despite the heat they have needed very little watering. They are a great source of calories and protein in this area of the world where other legumes don't fare so well.

The forest shelter has been progressing quite a bit but that's stuff for my next post. Until then, stay blessed.

I love reading what you've been up to, however mundane. HIVE has a place for all kinds of posts, and to be honest, not all of us like to read long 'impressive' posts - they just want to catch up and enjoy what people have been doing.

I love that you are enthused about natives - it's important to honour your immediate landscape! There's not a lot of Australian natives around here I could use day to day, or indeed that are particularly useful to me. Really interesting post, and it's good to see more 'herbal' posts on HIVE too - seems to be a bit of a lull in them as we all focussed on #naturalmedicine #mentalhealthawareness!

I've never found nor eaten a morel!

Maybe Covid-19 got a lot of people researching which herbs could be useful because it does seem to be trending a lot!

Morels are delicious, do yourself a favor and see where to get some 😋

Love you sharing a bit of your spring for things like morel hunting seems so far of in the distance here!
That Berberis darwinii sure is beautiful and wonder that it is edible and a good source of vitamin C!

Looking forward to seeing the update on your forest shelter.
Have a Happy Spring!
